Philando Castile Peace Garden

Community buildings

In 2016, following the tragic police-involved shooting of Philando Castile, a makeshift memorial began to form on the site of his death, located on Minnesota State Fair property. The community, fueled by grief and anger, quickly transformed the area with signs, murals, sculptures, and mementos in honor of Philando, a beloved food service supervisor at a local elementary school. The spontaneous memorial became a powerful site of mourning, resistance, and public action, particularly after the officer responsible for Castile's death was acquitted. Recognizing the need for a permanent tribute, the Castile family and community members reached out to 4RM+ULA to help design a lasting memorial that would both honor Philando's life and provide a space for healing.

Over the next six years, 4RM+ULA worked closely with the community to overcome challenges, including securing the necessary land control, fundraising, and navigating the long-term commitment required for such a project. This effort culminated in the completion of The Philando Castile Peace Garden, a dynamic space that celebrates his life and legacy. The garden now stands as a permanent tribute to Philando, representing a place of reflection, peace, and resilience for the Twin Cities and beyond. Nathan Johnson’s 4RM+ULA’s leadership and dedication to the project helped transform an ephemeral memorial into a lasting landmark, embodying the collective spirit of the community and their commitment to justice and healing.
