In Fall 2021, 4RM+ULA was selected to lead the Urban Design for the 38th and Chicago intersection in Minneapolis, now known as George Perry Floyd Jr. Square (George Floyd Square). The intersection is one of the most significant intersections in the country, with people traveling from all over the world to visit the site.
4RM+ULA’s work continued in 2024 with leading the Visioning and Priorities Community Engagement, connecting multiple departments at the City of Minneapolis with the community. The engagement work sought to outline a shared understanding of vision and values for George Floyd Square and priorities for future development. The engagement work developed a framework to coordinate past, present, and future work at George Floyd Square. This framework was integrated into three primary projects at George Floyd Square. Each project was evaluated and implemented based on the vision framework, values, and priorities developed during the George Floyd Square Visioning Engagement. The three projects included: Streets (Right-of-Way), Peoples’ Way, and Memorials.
In addition to those three projects, the City of Minneapolis, 4RM+ULA, and Cultural Wellness Center advanced discussion around other community priorities including racial healing, community safety, and economic vitality. Underpinning all of the engagement was an acknowledgment that George Floyd Square was created by a community that is still and will remain in active protest to racial injustice. 4RM+ULA continues to work on George Floyd Square to ensure the space remains relevant and responsive to evolving needs.
