James Garrett Jr. is a visionary architect, visual artist, and writer whose multidisciplinary approach transcends traditional design boundaries. As Managing Partner at 4RM+ULA, he integrates artistic expression with innovation to create resilient designs that reflect a deep understanding of 21st-century urban environments. With a Master of Architecture from Parsons School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, he combines creativity with technical expertise to craft designs that resonate with communities. Born in the Virgin Islands and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, James's deep connection to his roots fuels his commitment to creating inclusive, impactful environments that drive social change. His portfolio features transformative projects such as the Juxtaposition Art Center and Rondo Commemorative Plaza, each reflecting his belief that architecture should empower and inspire. Recognized with the 2019 AIA National Young Architect Award, the 2020 AIA MN Gold Medal Award, and his elevation to the AIA College of Fellows in 2023, James also plays an active role on the Metropolitan Council Livable Communities Committee, where he contributes to shaping sustainable urban environments.
